Culture of fear is killing morale and productivity

Pros

If you can survive, IBM offers tremendous opportunity to navigate and change direction within your career. IBM offers great education and training, and internal job changes and growth are expected and encouraged. I myself changed direction with my career four times.

Cons

I have survived many years of layoffs (resource actions or RAs) here at IBM and the frequency, intensity, and number of talented folks released each time has become frightening. It no longer matters your contributions, amount of revenue you generate, your performance, your value, how long (or how short) you have been employed... you have simply become a number. As a result, the once dynamic collaboration, teamwork, and pride in this company have disappeared and most live in fear of the next quarterly RA. Many reviews here on Glassdoor talk about the benefits of working from home and IBM's work/life balance; don't believe it. IBM has recently decided to force most employees to come to an office (sometimes to one hundreds, if not thousands of miles away). IBM is hemorrhaging talent as many scramble to leave before they are forced out.

Pros

Large company with lots of interesting technologies to explore and a very fast paced environment but very focused on immediate results.

Cons

Consistently fire top performers over 40 years old - replaced by younger workers or H1B visa workers. Way to focused on reporting positive Wall Street metrics as sales fall as a result of their most experienced sellers losing their jobs to reduce expense.
