Pros

You get to sell cutting edge products with some of the smartest people around.

Cons

Google "IBM Age Discrimination Lawsuit" and brace yourself. The Google "IBM Commissions lawsuits" for round two. In 30 years in sales, I have never had a company try to screw me out of a very large commission the week after a deal signed. They claimed there had been an administrative error and cancelled my incentive letter, issuing a new one for me to sign that would have cut my commission in half. There was no mistake. I knew the compensation plan my colleagues were on and it was the same as mine. Managers who I thought were friends were spineless and went along with this farce. When I sought legal representation, I was surprised to learn how common this practice was. IBM has a culture that promotes technocrats, not leaders. You can make good money at IBM, if they decide to pay you. Current sales management cannot be trusted.

Not what it used to be

Pros

Get to work with smart colleagues. Work life balance is pretty good but pushing for return to office.

Cons

Benefits are just ok. Rarely get a bonus and when you do it's nothing to write home about. Employment is at the whim of how the stock price is faring in a given quarter. They reduce headcount by the thousands with no rhyme or reason to who gets cut, as long as heads roll and they can temporarily juice their stock price.

Pros

Great variety of learning and IBM certification options for HR & TA, tons of tools/resources available via the IBM app store, the majority of IBM offices are fairly decent workspaces and are easily accessible in most cities, lots of opportunities for project collaboration with colleagues in other geos

Cons

Exec/global leadership teams need a major overhaul if this place wants to survive much longer. Working at IBM feels like it's 1980-1985 all over again, there are thousands of homegrown archaic systems that do not interface and the majority of back-office work and data analysis is performed manually via Excel, rendering the IBM tools/systems completely useless aside from leveraging them as a DW/system of record. For a company that loves to give off "innovative" vibes to the public by spending huge amounts of $$ on advertising/ commercials etc, they dont even know what innovation is - its a huge front. AskHR has improved slightly over the past few years but their AI capability has a very long way to go.
