      IBM 1992 all over again

      Pros

      Large company with many good people.

      Cons

      Direction is faltering. A series of short sighted bad decisions have put IBM behind in most categories. These short sighted decisions still persist today. Inter-company rivalry puts one IBMer against another in an increasing escalating cycle. Lack of care/respect for employees is growing as IBMer at all levels fear for their jobs. Lack of communication by management only increase fear uncertainty and doubt about job security. Salaries lag behind industry

      Pros

      1) Great place to work for a new graduate, junior or in lower middle management staff 2) Great access to vast intellectual capital and talent 3) Rapid growth possible with the right sponsors and not mentors behind an individual which they have to identify for themselves.

      Cons

      1) It's not such a good place for upper middle management and seasoned professionals: - Bullying is a massive issue - Intimidation of staff is another massive issue {NB. HR does not focus on protecting the staff. It's focus is on protecting the company. Note also that IBM is not a Unionized company so there is no place to go when a member of staff needs support} 2) No value or loyalty towards hard working staff 3) Glass ceiling for women and minority races {NB. The token gestures of doing the right things by women and minority races are all North American centered. European women or minority races professionals, rarely progress through the ranks however talented}

      Once was great but now struggles

      Pros

      Had a fantastic run in IBM because career choices were there. Can always move around within the company. People mostly were of high calibre but deadwoods were there too. Fantastic process. While can be overbearing at times, it made sure everything were done properly

      Cons

      Too slow to react to market change. CAMSS had been in the market for several years before IBM decided to enter it. IBM was a market leader, innovator. Now it contends to be a follower (the late move into CAMSS is a prime example). It completely lost its innovation leadership and I fear the end is close ala Nokia. Career opportunities are now limited to presales and sales roles. Not a lot of other roles left.
