Pros

It has been a fairly stable place to work for the last 6 years. The work can be interesting at times. There is some variety, and lateral movement within a division is generally easy. It can be a good place to learn, with a lot of resources (scopes, analyzers, chambers, etc) available, which small companies can't afford. You may come in contact with experts in many fields, research scientists, etc. There are education benefits that might possibly be better than comparable companies.

Cons

I can only comment on xSeries, a subdivision of STG. Depending on the management chain, work/life issues can either be treated well, or badly. Like any large company, creative employees can feel stymied by the bureaucracy. xSeries is/was a large area, with a variety of projects to work on. Many of the hardware projects/jobs are moving to Taiwan, and software to mainland China. The career path of an engineer seems non-existent. There is nothing to work towards, newhires and senior engineers work on the same stuff. Being a capable senior engineer does not guarantee a lead position, or preferential treatment when it comes to layoffs. Dead wood can survive a very long time. It's easier to dispose of a bad employee by sending off with a decent review, so the next dept gets the problem. Employee benefits have been steadily eroded for the past 10-15 years, the culmination being the freezing of the pension plan in '08. The guys with more than 30 yrs as of last year have a nice retirement to look forward to, the rest not so much, and newhires get the worst deal of all.

Pros

Benefits, they are still great compared to other Large companies, but slowing losing ground. Working with a great group of people, it really does feel like a family. Flexibility to work from home a couple days a week. I am actually more productive on these days. Flexibility with work hours, ability to start a little later if needed, or take a long lunch for a doctors / dentist appointment. Most first line managers are wonderful. Recognition when a job is well done. Continual effort in fostering of teamwork.

Cons

The constant fear of 'the job' going over seas. Upper management is too quick to say yes to every poor idea.

Pros

At least in my organization, there are few impediments to working from home, where I tend to get more work done during busy periods than I do at the office. (However, I'm discouraged from working at home more than twice a week. Managers have told me that, because of a lack of office space, there are people who patrol our work areas, on the watch for absences of over two days and supposedly eager to transfer unused spaces to other people.) Also, you can show your appreciation for people who have helped you out by giving them a Thanks! award. This award allows those people to choose a gift from an internal site. Although the items all have "IBM" sewn, etched, embossed, or whatnot on them, some of them are useful. Finally, my health insurance served me very well recently. My service provider paid out large claims promptly and never second-guessed the opinions of my doctors. I can't say more about that without the risk of identifying myself.

Cons

We are given much direction about the sorts of goals that we should be seeking; however, we must meet those goals on top of completing grossly understaffed projects. For example, near the beginning of every year, we're told what our organization's strategy is going to be. Higher-ups give presentations that span the entire strategy, while senior staffers present on substrategies meant to ensure the success of the larger one. Every year, the strategies seem to encompass more than they did in the previous year. Yet, we have many fundamental problems in our processes that lead to poor quality in what we produce. The yearly blasts of strategy never address these problems, instead tending to aggravate them because they ensure that we will continue to look elsewhere for our self-respect and job satisfaction than in producing quality products and decreasing the aggravation that leads customers to call our support line. Moreover, the goal of our management team seems to be to push more features into our products more quickly, and not take time to address a growing accretion of defects, shortcomings, and other insufficencies.
