Pros

IBM values their employees. Employees are compensated well, both in their salary and medical and health benefits. Employees are provided an opportunity for advancement all over the world. If you are requested to transfer to a new location, they make the entire process as painless as possible. They help with the sale of your current residence, provide interim living expenses, help with the purchase of your new residence and even subsidize a lower interest rate on your new mortgage. They provide all of the resources necessary in order for you to complete your work.

Cons

The only difficult period was during the troubling 1990’s. At that time, IBM was forced to abandon their “Full Employment Principle” and initiate the Ranking System, whereby, periodically; the lower 5% of the workforce was dismissed.

Pros

IBM Microelectronics works on some of the most bleeding edge technology projects in the industry. You'll be working on industry leading projects. IBM makes the processors in all the latest video game consoles and was a leader in developing multi-core processor designs. Their foundry and manufacturing business

Cons

In my opinion, IBM doesn't want to be in the processor business. They're just trying to milk the division until it no longer helps serve Services and Software groups. I don't believe they compensate the microelectronics group fairly in terms of performance bonuses. Server group almost always gets the lowest bonuses at IBM even though the other groups revenues are based upon server group hardware.

Pros

The Work/Life Balance is usually pretty good. Our prescription plan is excellent. When you find the right area to work in, you can have a really good time at work every day and be proud of what you have accomplished. I hear a lot of people from different divisions say that they have GREAT people to work with. People respect you as an IBMer and know that you aren't going to mislead them. There are generations of trust behind you. Generally speaking, first line managers are pretty good and are kind of in the same boat as regular employees.

Cons

Our performance rating system is a ridiculous leftover from when IBM needed to cut the fat. The fat is all gone, believe me! In general, this is a hard time for engineers at any company. At IBM, bonuses and raises are often pretty bad, even when the company does well.... even when you get promoted. When people leave the company, it's rare to back fill their position. In our area, we sometimes don't even back fill with an offshore job.
