IT - too much politics

Pros

Work from home and goo IT budgets.

Cons

IT is full of politics. Every thing is getting outsourced to India ( actually this company is 10 years behind, in terms of outsourcing. The other companies are coming back to USA, we just have began outsourcing) People from US are asked to report to a manager from India. Manager in India has 50 plus direct reports and several indirect reports. There are no standard rules, each VP has his own policies based on his/her own convenience. Too much money is wasted on custom development. We do the same stuff several times but still does not work.

Godawful place

Pros

Benefits are okay if you can stick around for long enough.

Cons

Dull, bureaucratic, life-draining (just check out the strategy map, which must exist solely to justify the existence of a horde of detail-nerds with no real understanding of business). Nepotism is rife - and you won't survive if you express an alternate opinion. Ideas are not valued until they've been submitted in triplicate and regurgitated by someone in the clique. Limited career-progression opportunities. Floundering without proper leadership.

Best of times, worst of times

Pros

Quintiles offers reasonable wages and benefits. Unequaled opportunities to work on a lot of projects, build experience and learn from some very talented people.

Cons

Quintiles is run like a cross between a modern company, medieval court and family owned corner shop. Much of the true decision making is made by a cabal of long term senior managers (tenure over talent) who only work together when an outsider is employed who is seen to threaten their existence by being competent. Formal training was poor
