      Be carefull what group you work for at Intel

      Pros

      The medical Benefits are decent. The culture tries to push work/life balance, but it is a changing culture.

      Cons

      Chance for moving up thru the pay grade is very limited. In the group i was in, senior management had no idea what to do with Software Engineers, including my direct manager. We felt like they never understood what we needed to do our job. The chance to move between groups and move up the chain is very limited and hard to do. If you decide to work for Intel, take some time to investigate the group you are going to work for and what the options are to move up the chain.

      Overall good choice for employer

      Pros

      Growth opportunities, competitive compensation package coupled with heavy work/life balance focus. Great people in a casual work environment. Intel values and culture are good, and it's not uncommon for personal lives to be improved from a (subconscious) propogation of the values to your personal lives.

      Cons

      Stock performance. Competition for senior management to fill next CEO role tends to result in many managers disappointed and leaving the company. Ever since Andrew Grove stepped down from CEO in '98, the stock has been flat-lined. There are obvious challenges here, but somehow we need to figure out the secret to re-energizing the growth. I keep hearing Atom, but we'll see.

      Pros

      Free coffee and soft drinks. I have also learned and witnessed senior managment at its worst, so I know now not what to do, if I ever so do. Knowing that without and beyond any reasonable doubt there are more fools above me than below brings warth to my heart and a smile to my face. Making it further up the bureaucratic food chain is like coaxing a banana sandwich from an ape, it can be done, you just need to out think them.

      Cons

      Senior managment seems to be "past their prime". The ideas flowing from the top down about staffing or other simple tasks for senior managers to perform or forcast for are poorly executed. More managers than technicians seems to defy even human comprehension.
