Pros

If you're into doing spacecraft and defense products, LM has one of the best portfolios of these sorts of things. It's a large diverse company and if you're interested in moving around to different projects then that opportunity is there (but you have to make it happen for yourself). If you're truly a superstar (top 1%) you'll be treated well -- but you still won't rise as fast as you would at a smaller company. On the other hand -- you don't have to work too hard. You can put in the standard 40-hour week and still be considered a good performer. So if you've got other things in your life than work it's nice in that regard.

Cons

The current "affordability" climate means promotions are almost nonexistent and raises are paltry. Don't take a job thinking you'll get promoted within a few years -- your manager might want to do it but his hands are tied by HR and central management. The raises are about in line with inflation -- so not really raises. The new health plan is expensive! The glossy brochures make it sound great, but here's the summary: If you're married with kids, expect to pay $3000/year in premiums. If your family remains in perfect health all year, then that's all you'll pay. But of course that doesn't happen. Factor in some kid office visits for colds, some parent visits for this or that, or even one emergency room or urgent care visit and you'll be out of pocket another $3000. So budget for $6000/year for health care. It *is* capped -- so the $6k/year is the max you'll spend. And you can choose just about any doctor you want. But that's about the only good news.

Pros

Pension if you're grandfathered in. Good employee discounts program. Large company that's good at playing the Washington political game, so it has weathered the economic down-turn pretty well.

Cons

Non-existent training budget. Healthcare too expensive. 401k match only 4%, and fund choices aren't that great. Too large to really get noticed. Poor management connection with the average worker. Employee performance rating system is poor.

Pros

Convenient location which resulted in a reasonable commute to work.

Cons

- The majority of the Lab Equipment in the Electrical Engineering lab was purchased in the 1970’s. In addition, there is no lab technician or lab manager to organize the lab and maintain the equipment due to budgetary reasons. - Engineers are not given the authority to make decisions or address road blocks. However, Engineers are held responsible for the assigned task by management. - Questionable practices in regard to charging of labor hours to government contracts. - Management refuses to write trip reports or inform the engineers of changes that affect requirements, schedules, or budgets. Engineers must call the customer to determine what changes management has agreed too. In regard to this problem one co-worker pointed out the fact that if a manager does not write it down the manager cannot be held responsible. - The small training budget is generally allocated to the recent college graduates. Long time employees in management positions will admit to never having completed a management training class. In addition, there is no budget or training program for mid level or senior level engineers. - The work is mainly low technology. Challenging high tech work is subcontracted out. - Insubordination issues by employees are not addressed by management in a timely manner. - Unknowingly, two different groups of people will be assigned the same task by the same manager thus duplicating effort. The result is overcharging the customer and over running the project budget. - Management ranks the employees. Rankings are generally dependent on management’s perception or familiarity with the employee as a result the employees at the bottom of the rankings are not necessarily the low performers. Low ranking employees are Involuntary terminated in staff reductions. - Personal vehicles are routinely vandalized in the parking lot. - Medical coverage is reduced by 10% on a yearly basis.
