Pros

There are opportunities to work on some awesome missions. Work/life balance is great for many positions. 9/80 work week, get every other Friday off!

Cons

Company policies affecting performance reviews, merit increases, promotions, and compensation remove all incentive to excel and try to move up quickly. High performers aren't really differentiated from average performers. It takes forever to move up - every coworker, high contributors included, has been promoted years after it was deserved due to HR policies. Your title doesn't reflect your actual level of competency or responsibility. Engineering salaries are lower than SF Bay Area averages, and almost no one receives profit sharing. Lots of ancient technologies & policies everywhere. Multi-disciplinary technical teams often require software engineers to come in at unnecessarily early hours.

Pros

Benefits were good (not great). Hours were good depending on the project. Many good job opportunities within the company especially if you wanted to travel. To keep costs down, company encourages good health practices. Good amount of vacation with emphasis to take the vacation for work/life balance. Company has values most people will agree with.

Cons

Stuck in some of the old ways of doing things. LM is a big company, and it is hard to get meaningful change within the corporation - mostly due to the nature of the type of work that has to be done for their customers. Leadership keeps changing organization and realigning departments, but it doesn't do anything other than confuse the workers. Cost of healthcare benefits continue to rise. Raises did not cover the difference in health care costs. Going through a rough spot and not afraid to let good people go. Has very interesting work or very plain, grunt work. It is up to the individual to seek out their career path.

Pros

Large stable company with locations all over the world Interesting work vital to defense and civil applications Opportunity to move to other business units/locations Decent benefits Decent initial salary at all levels (junior, mid level, senior) Management pays attention to what's going on, but doesn't get in the way of doing your job

Cons

Working for a good manager is hit or miss - there are a few good, some bad, most mediocre. You have to learn to manage your manager. I only saw one who was really horrible, Lots of status reports, yet seem to be surprised when bad news happens. LM has an affinity for discarding senior engineers. Poor raises every year - zero to 2% Benefits keep eroding away - no more pension, vacation accrual cuts, insurance rates keep getting more and more expensive
