Resume poisoning tech stacks, lots of responsibility, but no authority.

Pros

No complaints really. Great. IMO great pay too. No complaints at all.

Cons

Left due to boredom and low volume/volunteered layoff was my discharged reasoning.

Pros

Compensation and the retirement benefits for Engineers are pretty spectacular (I am a fan of ESOP funds). The health insurance is pretty blah. I have only ever been on LM insurance and my father's (manager at a different large company) so my reference point is somewhat small but my father's insurance seemed to cover a lot more, the upside on this is LMs are pretty cheap. You work on cool stuff and hours are relatively flexible (This will be specific to management). LM is also very good to Engineers and I haven't known of any layoffs in my 4 years at the company. It's a very professional environment.

Cons

You work on cool stuff but the work you contribute to that cool thing isn't always as cool or interesting as the system at large, this is particularly true for early-career employees. Getting promoted in your current group can be difficult if not altogether impossible (unless you get a competing offer and that point why stay wit the company?). For timely promotions, it is necessary to move around quite a bit. Because of those aforementioned difficulties, turnover can be high in certain salary grades (and on certain programs if the budget is tight) and I have seen many talented Engineers leave due to this slow rolling. Other than that the cons are pretty much typical of other Defense behemoths, siloing, cumbersome process, etc.

Solid Company, Average Pay

Pros

Depending on your role, and the time of year, this is a great place for work life balance. Employee resource groups and affinity groups are taken seriously and given a platform. The company is super responsive to outside impacts to employees, specifically with COVID and weather concerns. Most employees who do not work in the warehouse are adequately equipped to work remotely (prior to pandemic). Stable work, little to no fear of layoffs or shutdowns.

Cons

Very rank and title-conscious. Relies heavily on company name and reputation where it falls short in certain areas. Lots of internal promoting (which is generally good, but bad if you have a rocky relationship with your direct leader as they must give permission for transfers ). Pay is not super competitive, given the work and expectations at times. High deductible health plan.

Pros

Good work life balance. Interesting projects and self managed workloads.

Cons

5 managers in a year's time. Constant moving targets and abandoned projects. Lack of vision and follow through from directors and Senior Management. Fear of job security due to reoccurring reorgs and layoffs. Fear of keeping your job and carrying the load of those laid off.

Cons

given the nature of the company's core business (defense contractor) there are frequent layoffs and this is unfortunate

Lots of opportunity to learn

Business Outlook

Pros

Good company in terms of opportunities to learn new technologies, especially lately. Decent benefits.

Cons

Large bureaucracy. Not always great opportunities to advance (perhaps not so different from elsewhere). Constant organizational shuffling in recent years. Too willing to perform layoffs, rather than utilizing existing workforce for new initiatives. Diminishing focus on employees as people who desire a feeling of community with their work environment and those special touches that make an employee feel valued. Too much focus on bottom line, ultimately. Also, they lag behind the rest of the leading IT industry at least a few years.
