Unpredictable Mgmt

Pros

Some of the departments are great - allowing flexible schedules, trusting employees, providing training so you can grow in your career across the company

Cons

Some departments are the exact opposite of described in pros, feeling like you have stepped back into the 1940s with gender and racial inclusion, "old boys network," having face-time be more important than work product, etc. It all depends on the specific manager. Senior Mgmt really wants a compsny as described in the pros, but they aren't willing to get rid of long-term managers who do not fit with that culture unless they do something blatantly illegal. Their culture change initiatives have no teeth and no true champion. Therefore, nothing will really get better until that group of managers all retire in 3-15yrs. Career growth can be amazing, but once again is more manager based than individual performer based. If your manager believes in development, you can get training, growth assignments and a career champion that you will not get if your manager sees training you as a threat. If everyone who leaves a department is willing to lateral out, & then they get promoted quickly if they are lucky enough to get to another department, senior management doesn't see this as a red flag

Pros

All the benefits of a large corporation, decent pay (but I have my gripes with this), decent retirement, decent benefits. They are very accommodating when downsizing, giving you plenty of time to find another job within the company.

Cons

Benefits and perks are reduced every year. Smaller programs like gym membership reimbursement have been entirely cut in recent years. I have a rather low comp ratio, perform well, and still my raises are behind inflation. Higher education partnerships have been cut in the last few years. Most managers don't know the basics of leadership, but are really good at being nice to you in person. I don't trust the leaders and managers. I've seen employees hired from across the country, told "we have work until 20XX", then those same employees were downsized 6 months later. I've heard of managers coaxing employees to share concerns, then using those complaints against them.

Pros

Good pay. Lots of contract opportunities

Cons

Performance reviews were garbage. You were rated by a group of managers that you never met. My manager was located 10 hours away and I only spoke to him during review time. Hard to move up unless you have a Masters in Engineering from an Ivy league and young. They tend to push older managers out.

Pros

Lockheed Martin had a great work environment overall. Great talent and co-workers all around. Made some long lasting friendships and learned a lot from those that I worked with. The company also had good work from home options for those that had the right connections. Some opportunities were being provided with rotations to other business areas within the company so that not all LM service desk employees were being "pigeon holed" into one particular career path.

Cons

Working in the company support Helpdesk environment did not leave much room for advancement. Once you were part of the helpdesk, it was a battle to try and get work within the other departments. Many who did move to other areas of the company chose to end their employment with the LM Helpdesk and then apply from outside as it seemed to provide better results. There is also a huge amount of favoritism amongst many of the managers that worked in the Helpdesk environment. If you played nicely with them and spent time chatting it up in their office, you were more likely to be chosen for projects and career advancement opportunities.

Pros

Great company to have on resume, lots of different jobs to do if you want to, good benefits and vacation time, flexibility of work hours, 9/80

Cons

Advancement can be throttled if you have a bad manager, in seat promotions are nearly impossible to get, performance rating system is terrible you can work hard all year and get a lousy raise bc your manager didnt fight for you. Here, you need to be in the bosses inner circle to get ahead so network hard!
