Pros
If you can tolerate an initial hire period in a difficult department such as lumber, garden/seasonal, or paint you can often be rewarded with a position in a department such as millwork, flooring, or appliances that pays much better. I've found Lowe's to be a good choice to work at while I attend college but I do not plan to make a career of it.
Cons
The retail schedule is difficult on family life, although being a college-age bachelor I don't mind as much as some of my older peers. Difficult customers wear me down. Company policy will dictate you tell them "no" for things such as bogus/stupid returns or discounts. The pattern seems to be that we floor associates follow policy but the customer gets what they want from management. It makes us look incompetent.
