Pros

A generally flexible working environment. There are opportunities to learn multiple departments within the store as well as transfer to them. Customer Focuses bonuses for simply doing your job are pretty decent throughout the year.

Cons

As a retail business weekends are a must for availability. Also with retail, customers can sometimes tend to be quite rude and demanding but generally not the case. Some cases of poor management often cause morale issues among floor employees.

Advancement is possible/ believeable, it can happen if you want to grow within the company.

Cons

Company rules as far as vacation/ time off. 30 days in advance and it's not guaranteed you'll get your time off. Also, my location doesn't encourage continuing education outside of the company (college)...

Pros

Good benefits, reasonable hours for retail work, benefits for part-time employees. If you are uneducated and need a job with long-term benefits and a retirement plan, it's the way to go. A lot of older employees - returning to work, or even retirees just needing a few hours seem to be happy working there. Honestly the stock options and 401k benefits are hard to find anywhere else. There are also usually enough part-timers and younger workers that will work the later hours that parents and older employees may not be willing to work. Overall it wasn't a horrible experience but I found myself dissatisfied often.

Cons

Management seems uncaring at times. You can get shuffled around without any warning, and it's not usually to a department or job that you would ask for. I was moved laterally several times when I thought it should warrant a promotion and/or a payraise. In my eyes, moving from cashier to cash office clerk is a promotion - it required a lot more brains and trust than just managing a $200 cash drawer. That job change did not come with promotion, and then I was moved from there to a Special Order Sales Clerk (title no longer exists) without promotion, and then to RTM clerk with out them asking if I wanted it or a payraise. In 3 years, I only received one raise but was definitely expected to do more each year. Time off is hard to get when you want it.
