Hired into an executive role at Facebook

Pros

As an establish Silicon Valley executive, Facebook moved fast in courting me and offering me a competitive package. They have excellent on-boarding and training programs: for individual contributors, for managers, and at the executive levels. Senior leadership is very approachable. Its straightforward to find good mentors and collaborative partners. The "social networking" that goes on inside the company is richly informative and generally very positive. Despite being a large company, it retains a youthful feel, with an appetite for risk and decisive action which is dazzling given the scale and the weighty consequences that entails. People are honest and direct, and "company politics" is discouraged by a robust culture that strives to keep alive the best of Facebook-- while also staying pragmatic and adaptable. The company is earnest and generally unflinching in applying its principles. Especially, it moves fast and gets things done. Earnest and purposeful. Human executed processes, around hiring and planning, are tight and well reasoned.

Cons

The company is so driven by short-term impact that it is relatively harder here to carve out large, long-term plans. Work-life balance can be an issue. Separation of professional life and personal life is less here than some might be comfortable with. Internal tools and quality can be lacking -- but there is a rising commitment toward changing that.

Pros

Smart and brilliant people Respectful communication Diverse people Huge impact that you will be making Great product with positive development dynamics Lots of opportunities to change the roles/teams within the company Amazing perks

Cons

For what you get in perks you need to be ready to sacrifice work/life balance. You will be spending most of your time either working or hanging out with colleagues Sometimes unhealthy amount of travelling (which is not always necessary in modern world where you have video conferences) Middle management is bad. People who are promoted into the roles very often are not ready and not much willing to learn how to manage people. There are no poor decisions by managers. They will always be right. There is a big gap between the ideas of the head office and the actual needs in different country markets. Facebook is becoming big and slow machine when it comes to actions and decision-making.

Human Resources Fail

Pros

Globally it is a good company to work at, great mission and vision and strong values. There are some good communication channels to expose problems. Strong encouragement and support to give their employees a healthy work-life balance.

Cons

The values do not apply in GMS (Sales teams) and even less in regions that are not in US. The LatinAmerican management is irresponsible. There are problems in each country in terms of compensation and growth opportunities. The worst experience is the recruiting process with tons of promises through the phone and they are not able to send you a written offer until you have accepted & signed online. After your first paycheck you notice that they didn't get all the benefits that were promised through the phone, because "they couldn't write it on the contract where you could only see your yearly compensation" "because they were local benefits". Salary payment processes are outsourced and unmanaged by internal teams, resulting on taxing issues and each country's inflation and devaluation affecting the life quality of the employees by not being able to adjust the salaries when all living costs have dramatically increased. The local management teams are not receptive on the employees concerns. In each region; salaries and seniority levels are given not by real performance or experience but by relationships. There is retaliation on complains, there have been open "advices" to avoid complaining. This is worrying for a company with the open culture like Facebook.
