Great product but questionable leadership

Pros

Miro is a really great product with some very talented people behind it. The pay and benefits are good, and I met many amazing people working there. There is a big focus on culture and in person events, the office is beautiful and lunch is great.

Cons

It’s a business, so of course the focus is on the business! However, there has been a concerning trend of people from minority groups leaving the company due to not feeling safe, understood or supported there. The D&I efforts are coming along slowly but it’s clear that Miro is way behind comparable SaaS companies when it comes to this, and leadership has shown several times that their stance will always be “neutrality”, hence discussing underrepresented minorities as if they are a political issue to appease, and not actual humans working for their company. If you’re a person of colour or queer, probably best to look for employment elsewhere. Career advancement opportunities/speed was disappointing and they recently went through a 7% layoff. Benefits focusing on health were lacking - no counselling or therapy covered, no fitness membership etc, and colleagues often complained about feeling overworked and overwhelmed.

Pros

- The product is great, fun, easy-to-use, and fun to sell. - The offices are awesome with great benefits, snacks, drinks, coffee bar (and barista), and lots of collaborative workspace. - The culture is collaborative, but to a fault (see cons) - Colleagues are kind, friendly, and wiling to help each other out. Everyone is brilliant, but not egocentric.

Cons

- Poor leadership. C-level execs are woefully disjointed. - There are too many meetings for the sake of meetings. Leadership wants to appear impactful but are really just adding needless work when people are already swamped. Too many customer-facing calls needlessly involve multiple managers who don't add value. It makes it seem as if IC's can't be trusted and leaders are looking for reasons to pat themselves on the back. - When there's a problem heads will roll and individuals are sacrificed and replaced when the organization should really step back to identify, strategize, and actually address the root cause. The environment just feels desperate. - The culture is broken. People are burnt out and disengaged. Feedback is recognized but not actioned. Leadership is cliquey. - Most of the people management positions have no idea what they are doing and only got in those positions by being in the right place (hyper-growth start up) at the right time (pandemic). With the market shifting, the company mainly only hires from competitors to acquire inside knowledge instead of recognizing existing talent. - Not very remote-friendly. If you are in one of the [office] hubs, you're expected to be in the office 2x/week although executives never show up. If you're fully remote you are a second-class citizen and will have less recognition and growth opportunity. If you're an executive, no matter where you are, somehow none of this seems to apply. - Constant restructuring and too much pivoting on strategies. More than your average tech company of this size.

Hi there, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We appreciate your feedback, as it allows us to identify areas where we can make necessary improvements. As an organization, we've reached significant milestones and achieved numerous successes throughout our journey. Our commitment to our mission and creating a lasting impact in the market remains strong, and we know that to be successful in both, we need to transform—responding to the needs of our customers, the evolving technological landscape, and Mironeers. However, transformation is rarely an easy pursuit and often feels messy. We know that there have been changes in both structures and priorities, but we’re moving into a new era with a clear direction and vision. We'll need to work through this transformation by applying the Miro Mindset, leaning into our shared Values and Miro Behaviors and working to refine our culture and ways of working for the next chapter of our journey. Thank you again for your feedback, and we hope you stay with us as we move forward on this exciting journey. Ben Craig - Chief of Staff

Pros

- Amazing colleagues from most departments - Mixed generational atmosphere - Catered lunches and snacks - Professional and transparent interview experience - Good 401k match - Neat product, for now

Cons

- Lack of empathy during the recent round of layoffs. VP laid me off and did not even know my name. He/She read off a script and the HR counterpart had no answers to any of my questions and both seemed annoyed I even had questions. Director who likely helped make the decisions did not even show his/her face in the meeting and only reached out because he/she needed something from me - Underhanded and misleading conversations from managers and directors to gauge your value and commitment to the company - Disorganization in the layoff process made me feel the People team was unprepared for the layoffs which just made the lack of empathy more pronounced. But the CEO had the PR layoff blog post all ready for customers to see - Frivolous spending like the millions spent on the Monster ad and light up wristbands to tell people to come back to a meeting room for a large corporate event - Product no longer has a distinct competitive edge. The product is a one trick pony and Miro has missed years of potential advancement by relying on their PLG motion and now competition is stronger than ever and Miro is scrambling to differentiate - Push and pull among departments due to competing priorities of teams which cause friction - Lack of transparency in diversity assessment in their hiring process despite touting themselves as a diverse company

Thank you for taking the time to share this review with us and we are sorry that you were impacted. The decision to conduct layoffs was very difficult to make, however, our leadership team saw it as necessary for the business given the macroeconomic environment. While there is no perfect, easy or comfortable way to let people go, we committed to doing everything possible to treat those leaving with respect and empathy and to provide support and resources to help them land as softly as possible.
