Pros

Working with high volume products. This gives great motivation to external suppliers to start new project developments with Nokia. Vendors come to you, and not the other way around.

Cons

The R&D side of Nokia is highly focused on Finland. While I wouldn't say that there is a glass-ceiling for non-Finns as such, not being able to speak Finnish makes you somewhat of an outsider. You have to make an extra effort if you want to get ahead as a foreigner. Also, if you are not based in Finland, the situation can be very difficult. From persons I have spoken with who are based in e.g. Denmark, Germany, and in the US, there is a lot of resentment against the "Finnish mafia."

Pros

technology leader (almost), friendly atmosphere. Respect for people's personal needs, managers try to match company's needs with employee's preferrences when assining jobs. Well equipped labs. Open relations with managers. Not much pressure, no micromanagenet. Good bennefit package, but salaries somewhat stalled in past few years. Equal treatment. Considerate and knowledgeable middle management.

Cons

A bit constrained tech-wise as there is (at least in Van) only one line of HW products, namely cell phones. In that sense, there is somewhat modest room for innovation and creativity. Sometimes slow to respond to market trends. Some mid-managers are technicaly competent, but sleezy and incapable of leading organizing a simple meeting, let alone a team.

Pros

Nokia balances well a conservative business approach against the need for progressive product development. The pay and benefits were second to none for me as well as job flexibility. The opportunity to learn is tremendous, and there is a great emphasis on further education. The work atmosphere was mostly invigorating.

Cons

There are too many disconnects inside the organization. Much of this is due to Nokia's constant reinvention. The corporate floor is perpetually shifting underfoot, so many necessary long-term projects are never completed. People hold dear to strategic info that would benefit others in order to protect their turf. In many cases executive management fails to trust subject matter experts and administrators, who usually know what's needed to correct problems. Recent layoffs are poorly planned and conducted, with many of those subject matter experts summarily dismissed with no concern whatsoever for the resulting catastrophic disruption. Not enough resources are provided to the efforts necessary to carry the company forward. Sometimes Nokia is too conservative, especially in mature markets like the US. Often some high-level communications come across as lies when they conflict with other known info or eventual results. All of this is damaging morale.
