Pros

Pay is decent, if negotiated up front, otherwise do not expect to increase much of the course of your employment. Benefits (PTO, Medical) are good.

Cons

Too centralized - Paul has an eagles grip on every expenditure, new hires. He should be more focused on growing the company than whether or not additional resources need his approval. Raises are rare, unless you are senior management. Company wide bonus is approved by B.O.D. ever year, a portion of which is related to company performance, however not one employee knows what those goals are, until the fiscal year is over and we are told we only hit 75% of "The Number". Employees are overworked (average Finance employee works anywhere from 60-75 hours a week). There is NO work/life balance! Communication is horrible! Integrations of acquired companies are a nightmare and not very well completed. Seems managements only concern is acquiring rather than how well we can integrate (poor integrations do affect customer relations). Infrastructure is extremely poor and needs serious investments. Morale is overall unacceptable. Many employees/managers have been there since Scansoft/Speechworks days and continue to be small minded and not think outside the box. HR Policies are great for a company of 50 people, not 6,000.

Pros

You get to work with many different technologies and development frameworks as long as you're not involved in IVR development. Taking PTO is pretty flexible so far.

Cons

Compensation for going above and beyond is absolutely awful. Also, being one of the first in the company to successfully implement solutions and developing applications in markets the company was never in before yields the same poor compensation as developing the same type of applications that the company has been developing for more than a decade. There also seems to be a lot of favoritism toward more senior developers whom some of the newer guys have proven themselves to be just as competent as.

Pros

Remote Office working is available in some positions and is highly recommended...its the one thing Nuance does "get".

Cons

Where do you start? Nuance has yet to hand out raises in over three years let alone cost of living increase. Bonuses? Forget it! They taunt you and tease you and tell you to work hard all year long...then rip them from under your feet and blame the economy and bad business. I guess its considered bad business when you double and triple your profits every single year. Don't even know where to begin with how upper management all look "down" and not "at" the employees and give you the "low-life" look. All of them got there from knowing someone...who knew someone. Want to see a classic company with the "good ol boys" still in tact take a look here. If you do decide to still work for Nuance your best off to follow these rules and expectations: 1. Keep your opinions to yourself. 2. Do as the company says...not what you think is better or right. 3. Keep your head down so upper management cant look you in the eye. 4. Work very hard and neglect your own family so it feels extra nice when you "don't" get that bonus or raise. 5. Never expect a promotion.......believe me...it wont happen. 6. Be prepared to get an insulting salary for what you are expected of. 7. Be prepared to NEVER get recognized...praised...rewarded....for anything! 8. Be prepared to be told the company has no money to fund your raise...repeatedly year after year...and then see press releases that Nuance just paid 500 Million $ for another company they have no use for.
