No Room To Advance

Pros

Able to work from home, no top limit to how much you can earn, fairly flexible schedules with usually adequate work.

Cons

Low base pay, punitive practices, seems to value speed over accuracy, no advancement within Language Specialist (i.e., there's only one pay scale, based on speed. There's no "bump" for seniority, nor other classes within the Language Specialist title). Regularly reminded that the company outsources work to India.

Good people, uncertain market

Pros

- Generally very good people to work with (as I was told when I joined, "very few [jerks]," and that held up). - Very interesting product areas, especially if you're technical and in the voice/language/AI domains.

Cons

- Financial management and other overhead can be constraining. - In products and in hiring, Nuance is now competing with the big guns (Google, Facebook, etc.), as well as everyone who wants AI and machine learning technology. Not sure how well they can keep up since their pockets aren't as deep. - Moved from a growth mode (when I was hired) to gradual reduction mode, so opportunities for internal advancement became limited.

Pros

Pretty good benefits/compensation. Annual bonuses, stock purchase plan, 401k matching.

Cons

The company is constantly acquiring other companies so it never shows good quarterly results. The CEO is consistently one of the highest paid CEO's in Massachusetts, in spite of the company's lackluster performance. Heavy workload, lots of unpaid overtime. Frequent layoffs to try to improve the bottom line, rather than reducing salaries of highly over-paid management team.
