Pros

A big company that allows you flexibility in your work schedule.

Cons

Other than the upper management, Oracle does not take care of its employees. The culture does not recognize or reward employee performance. Management is not encouraged to build strong teams which are empowered. There are many layers of bureaucracy all designed to compartmentalize information and decision making. There is absolutely no information sharing with engineers. Even Senior Director level personnel are pretty powerless when it comes to budget or decision making. Having now worked there for nearly 4 years, I've lost any internal motivation to excel at Oracle. No one really cares. Also - Oracle mgmt is interested in selling the product that is there today. They are not interested in investing in the future on engineering products. Not interested in engaging with external bodies or cooperating with the community at large even if it is beneficial to Oracle's goals. Management is incapable of looking ahead - I doubt they are rewarded for such thinking.

Pros

- Depending on your team, you can work on good things, learn a wide range of technology, work with bright people. - Stable employer, flexibility.

Cons

- Salary is not at par with other similar companies in the SF bay area. - Oracle has stopped sharing profits with employees since 2008 even though executives are paid very well. E.g. ORCL product dev EVP Thomas Kurian made USD 36 million last year (compare that to 25 million for GE CEO).

Pros

Oracle offers a nice work-life balance, many employees are doing 9-5 schedule. The job security is very strong, i haven't heard of software developers layoffs in our building over last few years. However job security does not apply to consultants - they are in a vulnerable area. Depends on your manager you can telecommute part-time which is a nice perk. Overall a good company for people who want to keep a secure job and trade off professional challenge and compensation for that, somewhat socialist model. Many folks staying here for 10+ years - somewhat unheard of in a tech company. A lot of 50+ folks, means it is a good quiet firm to get to retirement age.

Cons

The work itself is not so challenging, you development skill can easily degrade over time. A lot of politics, i guess it is not exception of other large companies. No salary increases over multiple years, make sure you negotiate your initial compensation over an industry average. Bonuses are given once a few years and top 3-4 %.
