Searching for an identity

Pros

Excellent benefits, love my actual job (implementing software) and the travel along with the ability to work from home sometimes as well.

Cons

Big company politics, too many "middle" layers, last pay adjustment was a cut 5 years ago - not even a cost of living increase since, finally, the turn-over happening during all the recent acquisitions as well as the constant, almost quarterly, change in leadership and "direction" makes it seem like the company is still trying to define its identity and it seems to head in a new direction almost every quarter.

No room to grow.

Pros

Depending on manager, flexible schedule can be approved. Standard decent benefits. Company Gym.

Cons

No room to grow unless you are one of the “people”. Company known for major layoffs, in case it’s in crunch for money: some getting laid-off while others get promoted. After few layoffs organization was left with “skeleton” of departments. Workload doubled with no compensation. For few years there were no annual raises. Weak Human Resource; employee cannot count on HR if there are differences between manager and employee. HR sides with managers. No loyalty to the employees.

Cheap, Bloated, Lumbering Company

Pros

The pay was adequate, but not outstanding. I worked in a field office, so I avoided a lot of the corporate politics. Solid/smart people in some (but not all) product lines. Flexible work schedule.

Cons

Vision: The company has no vision and constantly shifting priorities. Even when your product line is a priority, PTC is unwilling to invest additional resources or money. Cheap: PTC (and many of its acquisitions) has under-invested in its product lines for years. As a result, they are increasingly also-ran solutions. Bloated: There are a LOT of layers of management, with each one adding additional wastefullness and meetings. Lumbering: There is no urgency to anything, and they waste a lot of their resources on ridiculous things. Considering PTC is stingy in their resource allocation, these people wasting time on dead-end projects could be used elsewhere. Not-invented-here: There is a lot of re-inventing the wheel, especially in the R&D groups. Why adopt a popular open source framework when you can create one from scratch? Nepotism: Many of the SVP, EVP and DVPs have children, siblings, or spouses working at the company. I'm skeptical that they were the best people for the job. Meetings and Committees: There are far, far too many poorly run, unfocused meetings. Not sure what to do? Create a committee to sit around and *also* not decide anything. IT: My office had to *beg* for new laptops. IT is completely non-responsive unless you are in Needham. Career: Limited career growth opportunities outside of Needham. If you want to grow your career, you need to move to Needham or quit. Hiring: Forced to use the Needham-based recruiters, who are fresh out of college. They mostly just posted the job to LinkedIn and searched for keywords. The quality of candidates was poor.
