Pros

Given the general media perception of the company, when I joined the company, I was expecting it to be less serious and more flamboyant than most new age tech firms today. However, Snapchat is a place that turned out to be as, if not a little more serious, than most of them. The people here are extremely driven and motivated. I think what drives a lot of Snapchat's views, beliefs, and policies, is the fact that it has not let its ideologies be motivated or influenced by external stimuli. Most of the decisions taken here are very objective and independent, and unlike a lot of what I saw at various Bay Area firms. A lot of this originates from the upper level management. My favorite thing about working here is being in the middle of such a rapid and crucial growth phase. Being an active part of such growth is a very educational process, and it is really motivating to see people going above and beyond to push the company forward. It really shows and promotes a general sense of ownership and dedication.

Cons

Rapidly growing company size means reducing personal touch with everyone else. Also, it would be nice to have more company-organized and company-wide activities.

Pros

Good pay, good benefits, food in-office

Cons

Really depends on your team/management, especially work-life balance. In general: expectations very high, hard to get promotions, nobody likes upper management, volatile stock, RTO requirements continue to constrict, seems like there's no communication between teams, constantly switching priorities, upper management will drop anything at the whim of the CEO. People frequently working after-hours or on weekends even when they're not on-call, especially for app-facing teams (internal teams less so). CEO likes to walk around office early morning or late afternoon wondering why nobody is in, once said "this isn't a 9-5", subsequently breakfast & dinner hours were pushed outward to encourage employees to come in earlier and stay later. Frequent reorganization = shuffled between managers regularly. LA-specific: in-office commute zone is 50 miles, which for LA means many people were driving 2+ hours one-way or staying well after work hours/dinner to avoid rush hour. Diversity is ok when just walking around campus and seeing who is there but recently (2024) the company went through a settlement regarding discrimination and harassment against women. Not many managers/senior managers/above are women. Not many senior engineers are women. Diversity programs (engineering) getting funding cuts/decreasing in size since 2022

Pros

- Competitive pay & benefits - Great work-life balance

Cons

my experience with a team is terrible but the impression I have for the company is very decent. the team I worked at is formed based on an acquisition and I'm the only non-original employee. my teammates' mindset conflict with the rest of the company and it's been miserable for me since week1. basically, Snap cares about you as a human being and this is reflected from many things: e.g. unlimited PTO policy, healthy lunch options, snack bar & kitchen. However the particular team I worked at denies that culture and requested me to work during sickness and bereavement leave. reason being, according to the manager of mine (former CEO of the acquired company) "I lost one of my parent when I was focused on this startup company and I chose my career over that" I was reminded repeatedly about how difficult it is for them to let-go a person in UK due to employment law, hinting me if I don't work during these time I would be let-go since it's much easier to be done in US. I don't believe what I've experience can speak for the company. On the contrary, people I've interacted with outside this team left me great impression. one con about the company: upper management (C-level)'s decision making on where to spend money has consistently been questionable.
