Pros

The company looks good on a resume. They are a good place to shop but a terrible place to work.

Cons

the pay is terrible. Cashiers- Minimum wage department specialists might make $.50 more then a cashier p/h Department managers in the state of California make between $13-15 p/h Assistant managers are required to work 50 + hours a week, This typically is more like 60 hours and if there is a walk coming up expect to work 15 hour days 6 days a week until the walk. They start assistant managers at $46,000 a year and even after being an assistant manager for 10 years still don't even make 60 K a year. Be prepared to be written up for EVERYTHING on a consistent basis. Here are some examples- you gave a customer too much of a discount. The economy crashed and people were not remodeling their home so you department(s)/store aren't making sales plan. You didn't merchandise product well enough, There aren't enough signs in the store. Home Depot treats ALL of their employees like slaves. They don't care about family. the benefits are decent but nothing special considering the size of the company Home Depot is. Oh and don't ever speak your mind to the management, always agree with them and tell them what they want to hear. If you do speak your mind and tell them a better solution then theirs or out shine them they will make your life a living hell. They even schedule management to work from noon -11 even though you are there till 12 or 1 and then have to be back at 4am and work till 3 or 4 pm. 9/10 times you don't even get a lunch break. I worked with the company from the time I was 18 until I was in my mid 30's. I worked my way up as a lot attendant to an Assistant manager. Over the years this company has changed. They have gone to pure and udder Poop (sorry can't use foul language)

Pros

1) great values, lots of community service opportunities 2) good salary for most, and bonus system for managers and above, pretty good recognition system 3) smart business model and competitive 4) seems genuinely engaged with the customers and communities 5) a lot of really great peers who all work hard and who are interested in contributing to success

Cons

1) awful life/work balance: very little PTO (10 days), only five holidays, no sick time (you are expected to work from home), don't complain about working a lot hours until you're consistently hitting 55+ (and in some departments, even then, keep quiet) 2) old boys club (yes, even still) 3) performance reviews are compared to other employees instead of hitting/exceeding your own goals, promotions are tough to come by unless you switch departments 4) oh, and the health benefits are terrible. I'm looking at another company right now where it would cost me 1/3 of what I'm spending now and I'd get a better plan
