Pros

Work life balance (for the most of time)

Cons

Full of semi-skilled (or unskilled) contractors Business teams have no clarity of where are they heading - they implement and revert changes most of the time to keep themselves busy Engineering teams dont have process. No schema definitions, no documents, no CI, some dont follow unit testing. There is literally no design phase, discussions are frowned upon. Architects are mere losers here. Politics is a must to do, else you will be a sucker On a scale of 1-10 in technology (10 being highest), if you are consider yourself more than 3 - DO NOT JOIN. I have seen people leave in 1-5 months of joining. I am leaving in my 3rd month.

Pros

Having worked at The Home Depot for almost 20 years I have met and worked with some excellent people and have learned much about the retail and the services industries. As a manager, the compensation was adequate to support myself.

Cons

The Home Depot wheel of values is a sham. The only people that they take care of are their shareholders with little regard for those that do the work and earn them their profits. District staff and above are aloof and are disassociated with those that actually do the work and in many cases view them with contempt. The Home Depot loudly states how it helps associates with higher education but the reality of their scheduling requirements and their low wages makes it extremely difficult to obtain a secondary education while working there (impossible if you are also trying to support a family). Home Depot does a poor job of delivering on it's promises both to the consumer and the associates by advertising promotions that are not clearly taught the associates and are in some instances impossible to deliver on. Home Depot will stay open in weather emergencies regardless of the hazards that it poses to their associates (staying open even while states close their roads), Home Depot hires at the lowest possible wages often paying their cashiers near minimum wage. Home Depot intimidates store management into contributing to their PAC which pushes an agenda that is contrary to the interests of their associates as well as the consumers at large (pushed for tax on online purchases as well as opposition to raising the minimum wage). Home Depot uses "employment at will" to get rid of higher compensated veteran managers and replace them with younger less compensated managers. Home Depot steals from their managers by firing them after they have earned their bonuses but before they have paid them and uses their own flawed policies to justify their actions. Complaints to their corporate headquarters and CEO are fielded by their team of HR trolls who merely confirm that their flawed unethical processes were followed.

Head Cashier Headache

Pros

Cashier training is very thorough, using self-paced computer simulations. Benefits for Part and Full Time Associates. Willing (sort of) to schedule around school hours. Head Cashier training is pretty thorough. Seniority is not used for promotional opportunities.

Cons

After training, very much sink or swim environment. Very little room for advancement. Although they do not use seniority to determine eligibility for promotions, promotions almost always go to those in the after-hours drinking buddy clique. HR is clueless regarding gossip, bullying and harassment issues. You must provide a list of available hours and days when you start and except for school hours, which they will grudgingly accommodate for, you are threatened with termination if you ask to change hours of availability. If you are a new hire you will definitely work every holiday; they are open 365. Management, including Front End Manager are hardly ever out on the sales floor. Every building I worked at was extremely under-staffed, and it was not uncommon to have one person working three departments. The contractors who come in first thing in the morning are often extremely rude. Of course that could be because there is only ONE! register open. Self-check is a joke, as there are many, many items which do not scan correctly and must be looked up and scanned at the main terminal. Cashiers and Head Cashiers are required to up-sell Extended Warranties and Home Depot credit cards at every sale, with ridiculous quotas to meet. Metrics are used against older Cashiers as a way to get them out before retirement age. The Corporate culture as far as buildings go is that everyone is out to steal whatever they can, and during secret shops they are very sneaky about hiding merchandise in order to "test" the Cashier. Another way to get people who are not as popular with the clique out, especially if they are due for a raise. Pay is low for the industry and turnover is very high. There is a sort of High School mentality throughout the company. Discipline is lax. There is a point system used to determine corrective consultations, but if you play politics and are in with the right people, you will never be questioned about lates, out sicks, etc. Buildings are dirty, loud, and are either very cold or very hot depending on the season. Point of sale system is horribly out of date. Table scanners and wireless scanners break down. frequently and so do check printers. Credit/debit card readers also break down frequently. Morale is very low as we wait for the next, and then the next, and then the next CEO to actually do something to improve working conditions and staffing needs. If I wasn't in school I would definitely be looking for other employment.
