Pros

There benefits (health, 401K, etc) are good. Strong customer focus in the stores which shows in their success

Cons

IT salary is below industry standards Matrix organization with poor charge back model Little to no planning for year on year or future roadmap. Very reactive in nature. Communication between individual contributors and executive management is filtered and blocked by 1st and 2nd level management.

Pros

I took advantage of every educational and professional growth opportunity I could find. I truly enjoyed assisting folks solving their problems big and small and the creativity of a Design position.

Cons

In the 7 years I worked there the staffing levels were gutted, they stopped hiring FT employees, hired 120 day temps instead. No career growth paths available other than retail mgt. Education programs gutted. Benefits slashed. Raises for top associates 10 cents an hour. Long term FT employees harassed into quitting or fired on pretext to cut costs. Store loud, dirty, freezing or sweltering. Irregular schedules having you work ten straight days. No predictable schedule. Bad for health, bad for family life,

Pros

If you take direction well, have a consistent good work ethic AND a consistent positive attitude, The Home Depot can become a career. You can move positions once or twice in a year and slowly work your way up the "food chain". Although you must always try to go above and beyond, whether it's with how you left your department looking after closing or if it's how well you assisted that irritated customer that had been misdirected twice already. Praise is given when you have REALLY earned it. I've moved six times in just three years, getting four small raises.

Cons

The raises are minimal. Until you get into management you don't make much. (The previous statement really applies to people about 30 and under without outstanding resumes.) Also, depending on the personalities of the people in management, you may seem to feel unappreciated. As soon as you realize you should never hold high expectations for Home Depot OR any of your coworkers, you will do fine. Fend for yourself.
