Pros

Great stability and benefits such as paid time off, health care, etc. Great opportunity for junior engineers to gain experience in a variety of fields. Job diversity is very good.

Cons

Upward mobility is very limited, seems like self starters and highly productive employees have a difficult time advancing their careers. Career advancement is more about training than experience or proficiency. Extremely limited opportunities for those interested in staying in engineering rather than transitioning to management. Limited compensation increases for senior engineers.

Cons

Your in the Military, if you do not like direction, organization, and time in the desert the Military is not good for you.

Pros

The best asset the USAF has is its diverse group of people. Lots of different backgrounds working toward the same goal is motivating. Great education benefits.

Cons

While USAF has great education benefits, many people find it difficult to use them. For aircraft maintainers, duty hours revolve around aircraft flying schedule, so its difficult to balance work/family/self improvement. AF loves the PT test, so if running is not your strong suit look elsewhere, because that score is the only quantifiable number used when sorting airmen. Finally, the AF is getting more and more about the details than the big picture. Most time is spent doing paperwork then actually completing tasks to directly fight and win.
