Pros

Immediately after college, a tremendous amount of responsibility was placed on me. I rose to the challenge. It was a challenge, make no doubt. There is a generous leave/vacation policy. But actually getting to take that time off is another story... The path to promotions is pretty straight forward for the beginning of a career. Pay increases are guaranteed. The ability to travel the world is great if you want it.

Cons

The lack of control over where you get to live/raise your family is frustrating. There are bases that are more desirable than others obviously. But if more control were given to personnel, perhaps people would be happier. This coming from somebody who was at a less desirable base and morale was low amongst junior level officers unless you were a pilot b/c that was *the* base to be for those officers. My specific career in the Air Force didn't translate into civilian world, but the lessons I learned about management, logistical and strategic planning are priceless.

Lack of focus on mission

Pros

Money and benefits. Many challenges that come up daily. The people are great as well.

Cons

Unlimited liability, job cuts, constant threats from Congress to reduce benefits. A lot of uncertainty of where you're going to live and when you'll be deployed, etc. It is hard having a healthy family life living like that. Lots of stress from unknown work schedules

Great training, Not for Everyone

Pros

The Air Force offers top-tier training and outstanding educational benefits to those willing and able to take advantage. I received a Master's Degree from an ABET accredited university with less than $250 out of pocket expenses. Travel can be a great opportunity, but the options available will vary widely with your career choice. The Air Force offers a highly structured environment with equal opportunity for advancement.

Cons

You will be deployed away from your family. There is a high probability you will not get assigned where you'd like to be stationed. The amount of "additional duties" will probably eclipse your primary job. You may deal with less-than-charismatic "managers" whose focus is not on taking care of their people, but taking care of their own career. You have to take a PT test, but if you weren't expecting that-the military probably isn't for you.
