Pros

The work you do has actual meaning in the large scheme of things.

Cons

The hours will probably be very long and grueling. Little choice in where you end up for a duty station. If you get a bad reputation, your life will become very difficult.

Pros

Most of the leadership at the commander level and supervisors I had were all fair, competant, and easy to work for. The benefits were nice, you can't beat the 30 days of leave you get as soon as you start! Pay wasn't bad especially when you take into consideration free medical, housing allowance, clothing allowance, etc. Lots of free/cheap services gym, outdoor recreation, auto hobby.

Cons

If you have a family the frequency and length of time you are away gets old. Some of the extra work you have to do for training is no fun either

Pros

The AF generally offers pretty good job security. Excellent benefits: 20-year retirement, health care, GI Bill, etc. Great opportunities to see the world.

Cons

LOTS of deployments to not-so-nice areas, constant moves (every 2-3 years), long hours. In the last 10 +/- years, there've been a number of forced cuts and the AF has forced a number of high-quality officers out of the service. The Defense budget is a constant target and they're cutting personnel. The mission isn't shrinking, so those that remain are stuck doing more-recurrent deployments (leaving even fewer people at the home base), working longer hours, etc. Lots of turbulence in the AF lately and it doesn't look like that's going away...at least not in the short-term.
