Pros

Great training - highly sought out on the civilian side post-enlistment. Training received as an Electronics Technician (or its sibling rate) is equivalent to 2.5 years of Electronics Engineering college coursework in a matter of 16-20 weeks.

Cons

Equipment maintained and serviced using archaic technology. My newest piece of test equipment was a ~18 year old oscilloscope that was showing its age. Many other pieces of test/repair equipment is in similar disarray, but expected to make precise and complex repairs with it. Work hours can vary by ship, but expect to work ~80 hours per week while "home" and on upwards of ~110 hours per week while at sea. Very stressful environment with very little support from higher-ups.

Pros

- Free Medical/Dental Benefits - Job Security - Pride Of Belonging - Very Good Pay.

Cons

- Leadership is usually the ones that just stuck around when all the good ones left. - Some jobs advance very quickly, while others cannot advance at all. - The maintenance system used on ships is one giant bearucracy. It is becoming more about having paperwork lining up for never ending inspections, then actually maintaining equipment.

Pros

Best in technical training in the world. Unlimited opportunities for those willing to make the sacrifices and "play the game".

Cons

Extremely political as rank increases, 80+% travel, deploy at moments notice for weeks. Promotions based on longevity and not always on talent.
