Pros

- Exciting and innovative technology - Many friendly and welcoming people who are very good at what they do and make coming in every day fun - Nice campus and facilities - Company has a genuine committment to give back to the community both in terms of $ and service - Fairly stable employment

Cons

- Not what it used to be, new Director and VP level management within Development and QE are alienating front line management by pushing constant efficiency and data collection efforts that have questionable value - With limited resources manager are expected to identify acceptable risk but when risks go beyond acceptable level executive managment is nowhere to be found for support - Director and VP level managment take people who consistently deliver and ship quality products for granted and instead focus rewards and recognition on "high potential" employees - Managers are consistently provided conflicting guidance and very short windows of time to make critical employee related decisions around salary, bonus, stock, & promotions - Compensation gets less competative each year

Pros

Company is filled with some of the smartest people in the industry Hot core technology that continues to gain market share, and blow away competition Customer base that loves the company Some cool visible perks that make it seem like a sexy company to work for -- free drinks, cool campus, etc. You really feel like you might be changing the way the (IT) world works

Cons

Advancement in this company from within is simply impossible. Regardless of your accomplishments, talent, or skill level, you likely will not move upwards from the role you were hired for without an act of God. You are a cog, and they will not move you from that role. Absolutely no career development -- no opportunity to work on projects outside your area, gain new skills or -- God forbid -- get training in an entirely new area. Forget going to outside classes. Sweatshop mentality has become the norm New leadership bringing in management from outside (cronies) that are less competent than internal candidates Arrogant attitude from senior management about "knowing what's best" for the company, yet reluctant to hear candid feedback Serious disconnect between achievement and reward for performance The pay just isn't that much better than working at a boring company with no growth (and a lot less work). You can be a cog elsewhere, with less stress and fewer politics.

Pros

VMware has great cutting edge and leading technology. It has bright and enthusiastic engineers. Great place to learn new technology. Executive level people are doing great growing the company. The technology itself is growing the company.

Cons

Directors and middle management people are not so good. They mainly manage by fear and retaliate if an employee says no. A lot of them have been promoted because of their time with the company and because they are in the club, where they feed each other.
