Pros
I started Walgreens in July 2012 as a Photo Technician/Customer Service Representative. I had never had a job in retail before, but was offered a promotion by the time I was there for approximately 8 months! Standard policy is generally one year before you are promotable, but they do make exceptions, when it suits their business needs, which I imagine can happen with any company, so no shame in that game! So, I immediately started training and I absolutely LOVED what I was doing! My duties were alot and it was very fast-paced, but I loved it BECAUSE the time went by so fast and there were alot of days you really needed that! I worked all 3 shifts and sometimes it would be what we all joked and named a "clopen" which was a close at 11pm then an open at 6 or 630am. I also worked mid-shifts in my schedule which was a 10am-630pm. Open shift was from 630am-3pm and close shift was 230pm-11pm and eventually was changed at my store location to 2pm-1030pm instead. Since Covid, I believe these hours may have changed somewhat because I do know their pharmacy hours decreased.
So, the job duties for a Shift Lead we're as follows but definitely not limited to these: open/close of store to include cash handling A MUST, which also must include accuracy because when you are closing the store especially, if their are errors in the cash handling from the cashier OR a manager when putting the drawers out for the day or taking cash pickups and possibly entering them into the system incorrectly, etc. the closing manager has to try to identify where the error took place through reports and recounts etc, and it can be stressful and takes time, which can lead to overtime in payroll for that manager, but also one other employee because there must always be 2 people in the store at all times, so you have to keep another employee late while you investigate and determine the error or errors IF YOU CAN, then correct them so your closing books and reports balance. If you do not do this, the opening manager will come into a mess and then he or she will have to go through all of the same process you did the night before. And sometimes, it happens this way and a fresh pair of eyes, or possibly a manager who has been there longer and knows certain things that can make the cash report not balance. The closing manager may have spent 2 hours looking and trying to figure it out and not been able to and then the opening manager come in and within 15 minutes have it figured out and corrected and went on with their opening duties! There is policies and procedures in place, though, that guide you on things to look for and how much time is too much time and when it is in the store's best interest for you to just leave it and see if the next manager has some insight or expertise on what it could be. Anyway, the managers handle all of the receiving of deliveries including checking all vendors in and checking all vendors out. This process can be very quick for some deliveries and can take some time with other, larger deliveries. It is a simple process of just scanning either the case label(s), verifying the product(s) match the invoice(s), then entering and posting the invoice in the computer system. Other duties included support to all store employees, including the Pharmacy staff, ensuring that breaks and lunch schedules are being adhered to and, if not, figuring out why and relaying that information to the Assistant Store Manager or Store Manager for corrective action, as the Shift Lead Managers are not allowed or expected to do any type of discipline, other than possibly be asked to serve as a witness to a verbal warning or a written warning because there always must be another manager as a witness to any and all corrective actions. The Shift Leads also were responsible for any customer complaints, to include resolving those complaints efficiently and ensuring that customer leaves happy and returns to your store! Other duties included things like inventory, ordering, stocking, resetting of depts, price changes and markdowns.
Cons
Walgreens can hire applicants who are under 21 years of age and, because they sell alcohol, it can make it frustrating when they schedule those employees on the cash registers because every time they get a purchase of beer or alcohol, they have to call for assistance and, at some stores, that can be literally every few minutes! Combined with cashier's calling for cash pickups, customer questions, cashier's calling for needed change, receiving doorbell needing answered with vendor deliveries, etc., their time can be spread very thin. So, with the Under 21 employees needing to call for a Code for all alcohol sales, sometimes you get caught up in just running around from dept to dept just trying to keep up with all of these little things that must be done and you aren't able to always get to your bigger projects you may have!
