Pros

- Dynamic projects, often at the forefront of international challenges - Passionate, dedicated specialists in a multitude of development fields - Feels like a big graduate school with a wide variety of specialists and experts. - Fantastic learning courses and training opportunities to enhance your career or interests. Really nice to be able to take "survival hindi" before you head to India--for free! - Nice perks for long-term consultants and staff (fitness center is great!) - Medical, dental, 41K, day care center for kids, etc

Cons

- Hit or miss with regard to leadership and team management - No signs of meritocracy-->disilusionment-->negativity. - Too many staff that have been there for 20+ years who have no incentive to progress or change bad habits. Makes for some negative interactions. - A lot of insular, national/regional alliances that seem to carry weight in some hiring processes. - Top-heavy management, burned out middle management (if you can even call it that) and mid-level staff, over-eager junior staff (usually wears off after year 1, before the jading process begins) - Limited HR resources for career mobility and related interests for all staff and consultants. Or rather, for staff, not for consultants (what kind of message does that send, if not one of exclusion?)

Pros

Senior staff took mentoring seriously and made an effort for me to take on more responsibility over time. I was in the JPA program, which meant that I had an opportunity to be on staff, although only for the limited 2 year period, which provided a chance to build strong relationships.

Cons

Low salary for junior staff, and inability to remain in the organization after the 2 year contract has finished. The program was first designed for undergrads, but most JPAs that were there at the same time as me had master's degrees. The requirement to leave for two years no longer makes as much sense as it once did.
