Process is long and tedious so you need to exercise some real patience when trying to break into the federal service. Have a backup plan for bridging the gap until you get the call and then be prepared as to what decision you will make if/when they call you.

Go to a recruiter, pass the ASVAB, decide on a job, if it's open during the time frame you decide, it's yours, if not, either pick a new job or a new date to go to basic, jump on a plane, begin your new life of at least four years, possible six.
