Pros

Encourages employees to participate in open source, conferences etc. Flexible working hours. Good cash awards. Hacking days, Sabbatical.

Cons

Not many promotion opportunities and poor guidance on how to achieve a promotion. A tendency to use open source or acquire rather than building IP in-house. Technical challenges are few. Too many managers.

Thanks for taking the time to give feedback and It’s great to read you are enjoying our benefits and flexible working environment. We are coming up to our mid-year review, which is a good opportunity to review your objectives, discuss your progress, and your development plan with your line manager. If you feel you are ready for more challenging work or goals that stretch you should ask for it and agree with your manager how to make that happen. Sometimes it can feel there are too many managers in a situation and I suggest you tackle that with your line manager so you both have a deeper understanding of why. There are defined expectations of the differences between the project and product manager, for example. You can also find situations where people are playing multiple roles e.g. a line manager and an engineering manager is common. Arm are very open to trying new approaches to how we operate. Have the team considered being more self-organised and taking on some of the management responsibilities themselves. I hope you feel the culture is open enough for you to be able to explore these ideas and be part of our continual improvement. The Arm grade framework provides information on roles at different levels in the organisation and grade is determined by a combination of the outcomes & capabilities needed and the experience the individual brings to the role. We are open about who was promoted and why – it’s worth discussing with your line manager how this applies in your group. If you feel that you need further support to understand how promotions and career development works, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your groups People Business Partner.
