The company paid minimum wage and could not understand why they had poor performance. Minimum wage = minimum effort.
My manager would complain every day about how we ranked a certain number in the company every day. He would complain and complain and not reward for hard work Although he did promote one person. They wanted us to do $1000 an hour in revenue but on a Tuesday morning, it’s a pretty slow day and not realistic. They treated us like we were on commission—but we weren’t. It was a mistake Best Buy moving to a non-commissioned sales role with actual expertise. They should be paying their sales people bonuses for the memberships they sell and the credit cards they open. And yet no extra money or reward for selling their memberships and apps. By the way I hit every metric they wanted me to meet. Also they trained absolutely no one also another reason for poor performance.
But the worst part was I was a high performer. And l could not handle the micromanaging “check in” and “check out.” Like in the morning before my shift I talk with my manager how I can succeed. Then at the end of my shift and we would talk about how we did. Again, goals sometimes not attainable. These conversations were demoralizing and discouraging even though I did a great job. Then later in the week we talked about performance AGAIN. We talk about it twice a day and then have a stupid meeting about it again! Make this performance conversation stop! 5 days a week and then one on one? When do I get to review my managers and tell them where THEY could improve? They have a lot of work to do too.
No matter how good you do, it will never be enough. But this micromanaging is almost the worst I have experienced.
Remember they paid us basically minimum wage. I was a high performer and they would not adequately compensate me. I have worked sales jobs before and no one ever put this much pressure on me to perform. They treated us like a commissioned sales floor and didn’t pay us like one. Capped pay really limits talent and retention.
Also their health insurance is expensive and it doesn’t cover anything.
