Pros

Great compensation and benefits, growing portfolios in important areas (e.g., climate, sustainability) which brings in meaningful work that excites BCGers, extremely smart and motivated colleagues, bountiful library of resources available to employees

Cons

As a lateral hire with work experience at other organizations (including other consulting firms) prior to joining, I found that the company is fundamentally structured to benefit those who do not value WLB (and by WLB I mean feeling comfortable closing your laptop before 10PM on an average day). In my experience, there are no WLB role models in leadership - for example, a MDP WLB panel once presented one day off a week as a commendable WLB set up, partners email at all hours with urgent requests, people at many levels have to designate non-work-related tasks to paid help or a partner/spouse, etc. The pressure of managing WLB also falls on middle managers who have little control over partner/MDP behavior. There are gender balance implications of this type of working style as you move up in the org (though the company is actively trying to improve this). It can be a difficult transition for lateral hires who have worked at companies and with colleagues that set work/life boundaries. My understanding is that lateral hire retention is currently low, in part because many do not find the working style to be necessary or acceptable.

Great benefits and pay

Pros

Company benefits and pay are great. They give out good bonuses and if it’s a client facing role, you get good work life balance (occasionally extremely hectic) and consulting perks. Lot of supportive colleagues to help and mentors who genuinely care for you. The company really lives up to its reputation and brand.

Cons

You are given less direction in the beginning and experience varies based on nature of the case you’re working on
