Pros

This is a large company with great benefits. They love to hire from within and there are lots of opportunities.

Cons

Cisco has gone to the layoff model to management. Their people have become disposable while middle management continues to grow and protect each other. There are too many managers with an inconsistent message. Half of the managers appreciate their employees and work with them to help them advance in their careers. Others want people that are going to stay in the same job forever.

We understand your concern and appreciate you sharing it with us. Cisco relies on it's employees to be the change, and want them to feel valued. Hiring from within is one example of how we do this.

Bad engineering has its cost

Pros

Good pay, good benefits. Free coffee.

Cons

Whatever you do avoid the projects that manage large numbers of servers. Poor engineering of products. Documentation is lacking. In my job the debug / edit / compile cycle was approximately 1 hour (versus a few minutes at most other companies). This is due to bad choices made in engineering, and the cost on current employees is very high. Cisco does not "eat its own dogfood." So the complex task of managing hundreds of servers is not deployed at Cisco. Furthermore, the company isn't willing to invest much in hardware. You'll be forced to use "simulators" to debug things, being that there is no big set of hardware to use. Also, if you are not Asian you may not "fit in". Don't expect the other employees to be very friendly or helpful.
