Pros

Salary to a point, and location.

Cons

Terrible management, terrible workplace and internal politics with folks trying to get up the greasy pole to be 'in' with the bosses. Backstabbing and general mayhem. All about targets and 'selling' the higher-end, higher-priced products and poor standards.

Pros

Good if you are a team member wanting to try out management. Taught me a lot about a lot of retail processes that I plan to use away from customers. My store had the best people. Met some of my life long friends and truly did have a laugh. Some of the regular customers are also incredibly kind.

Cons

Where do we begin?! Lack of protection for staff, Co - ops even in “safe” areas are still hotspots for crime. Left alone a lot of these time with two vulnerable staff members or just with one other person so never really feel safe. Either early or late shifts which change throughout the week so no sleep schedule is aquired. Truly never thought it would be possible to be run down for a solid year. Will often be put on a late, 2pm - 10pm, for several days. Especially over bank holiday weekends … very soul crushing. Many store managers also shy away from lates and leave to only TLs, not very fair. Distinct lack of staff in many co ops due to high turnover rates so incredibly hard to get everything done. If you are a team leader do NOT expect to have a break at all, or even eat. But don’t worry, CTMs who do half the amount of work you do get a lovely hour break while you fire fight the never ending processes and problems of a co op. The customers are also typically unbearable, I have worked many retail jobs but never met customers quite like these. It’s as if they are all conspiring to descend you into madness piece by piece. Been called more names than I knew existed but one silver lining is you won’t need to get a law degree as your argumentative skills will be already on point.

Thank you for leaving a review and for telling us about your experiences. Last year Co-op successfully campaigned for a change in the law . The new legislation introduces tougher penalties for customers who attack shop workers. Under the act, abuse against individuals who serve the public has become an aggravated offence. We know more still needs to be done to protect our colleagues and that the problem isn't exclusive to Co-op. It's important that all incidents are reported on MySafety. The more we know about what is happening in your store the more relevant support can be provided for your safety in store. Please do speak to your store manager about any concerns you have in relation to your shift patterns, workload, and safety in store.

Pros

Pay is good and i enjoyed the actual job. If you go for this job, work on the morning or back shift, COMPLETELY different vibe and AVOID the night shift.

Cons

Where to even start. The reason i left is mainly down to the people there. Honestly i have never worked with a bunch of more miserable people in all my life. Extremely rude staff (bar a couple), literally blanking you at every turn, ignoring you, cutting you off on lollops, i mean i don't go to work to socialise but this is a different kettle of fish, these people look suicidal and its infectious and then thefre is the management. Remember you can be a manger and not be able to manage. They sit in a cage playing on their phones and preaching to everyone what to do in a rude and non professional way, power trip comes to mind. No thank-yous for all your hard work, just negativity all night every night. The targets are unachievable unless you cheat the system (which most employees who have been there a while do, i know this because they told me). Its a massive shame as i could have seen myself staying there for a good period of time if it not for the people.
