Pros

Challenging, stretching and target driven. As a Store Manger, I have full autonomy over how I coach my team and how I deliver results. Seen many changes in the business, all for the right reasons.

Cons

Store Manger Salary hard to negotiate any increase. Slightly out of line with competitors. Increased workloads, but who hasn't seen that over the past few years. Most Operations managers are fair to understand frustrations however.

Pros

One of the perks of working for the Co-operative Food, is that you really do get a sense of belonging to a local community, which to be fair to the company is a real ethos of theirs, doing local charity work and getting to know all your regular customers is rewarding. The company have also just bought out their fair reward scheme and given majority of employees a high pay rise to bring our pay in line with our competitors. There is also the perks of having discount on almost all items for sale and the new benefits scheme where you can get 10% back on some online purchases.

Cons

Some of the downsides for working for the Co-Operative food are, for me personally the lack of support received from other stores and senior management when problems occur, this includes scenarios such as being short staffed, technology not working, etc. Another problem i feel the Co-operative food currently has it emphasis on staff completing certain tasks without the consideration for what setbacks may occur in any given shift such as being unexpectedly busy or deliveries being bigger than anticipated. There is still the problem of pay for colleagues also, to do the same job in another company i would expect to be payed at least £2-3 more without including Sunday overtime. The delivery system for my area is appalling as the delivery depot does not seem to cope at any time of the year, especially the peak times of summer and Christmas, this causes unneeded stress and sometimes danger for myself and colleagues due to the time deliveries turn up (if at all) and how products are stacked in cages.

Pros

Flexible working hours for all lifestyles. Publicly Owned Business, everyone gets a say in the direction of the business. Carbon Neutral and Ethical strategy. Very progressive. With the correct attitude there is always a high chance to climb the ranks. 10% Staff discount which applies to all co-operative owned businesses (Food, Funeral Care, Travel, etc). Community focused strategy offers equal opportunities for employees of all lifestyles and cultures. Within the last year has shaken up all previous, redundant strategies and is ambitious to be the #1 convenience retailer by 2017, and is being pro-active in doing so as of the beginning of the 2015.

Cons

Full-time contracts sparse and full-time hours are never guaranteed. Working hours are generated by a computer system meaning sometimes working hours aren't very appealing Lack of robust training modules Business as a whole lacking talent in Managerial roles (Team Leaders, Store Managers)
