Not an ethical employer

Pros

Good location and nice team

Cons

The management is cruel and harasses employees. There's no fair approach or any sense of professionalism in a workplace. It's just a bunch of incompetent people trying to hold on to their jobs and they will walk all over their team to get what they want. There's bullying, harassment, discrimination in the workplace (from management) as well as lack of any commercial sense. The way the company is run makes no sense and the money is wasted left, right and centre. Presumably they only stay in business because the food and services are so overpriced and the pandemic boosted the revenue. The 'ethical coop approach' is only a marketing gimmick and if they want to really make the difference they need to restructure. I'm sad to see bright and professional people being driven away by incompetent managers who got where they are because of favouritism.

Pros

Ethical and community based company. Puts local community in the heart of what it does. Lots of avenues to progress through different parts of the business so you don't have to stay in store or in the food side of the business. The coop paid for my apprenticeship that has given me a recognised qualification that I could take away from coop if I wished. Internal progression programmes too. Each store that I have worked it always has a family feel to it, which I think is due to how the business is run. Pre covid I was able to work at the pop up store at reading festival anyone who works for the company was able to apply we had people from funeral care food depots and insurance all working under one roof in a crazy busy store.

Cons

Difficult to get pay increase that you're entitled to. With experience, qualifications, plus the store pay band and next in line for promotion. I am still below the mid point for my pay bracket whilst others with lesser experience, qualification, accomplishments and lower band stores are on higher. It seems do be ependent on whether your AM favours you or not.

Congratulations on your apprenticeship, I hope that this serves you well in your career, hopefully with us 😍. You may have seen that in recent pay reviews we've been focusing on managing our internal salary differentials to create a fairer pay award, giving the highest increases to colleagues who are both best performing and paid at the lower end of the salary range.
