Pros

Good pension, fair pay and discounts on food.

Cons

Dreadful management culture. Taken on to a role which had no corresponding work. Literally nothing to do for three months. Nasty culture - the focus is to sell as much assets before the 20% stake in the bank pull them under. Sliding profits and plenty chaos as numbers are massaged as best possible. This was 2016. It will unwind soon.

Thank you for your comment. I'm concerned to hear about your feedback regarding your job and the culture you experienced. I hope you spoke with your manager at the time about not having any work to do. Regarding selling of assets, if you're referring to the closure of stores this is part of our strategy as we continue to work on an own brand convenience approach for our stores. Although we have closed stores we also opened more than any other retailer in 2016 and are investing in those stores we have. ^Catherine

Pros

Pretty good rates of pay, really good in store teams and store managers. Excellent community spirit demonstrated by people in store

Cons

Absolutely disgraceful expectations by area and divisional managers who haven't a clue how hard the job is since the management team in angel square removed labour. Such appalling waste of money spent on being coop rebrand when stores don't have the labour and tools to do the basics and provide service to customers. The mainly ex Tesco led food operations side of the business is now awful to work for and seems to be the team that led Tesco into dark places are now doing the same with the coop. The reviews on here seem to reflect that with most of the good reviews coming from HR (who live in a bubble) and insurance, who Have not seen the cuts that food have. There are stores which are not too badly affected but others which are almost impossible to run. Although feedback is given to area managers, regionals and the Tara team, concerns are treated with zero credibility and you are fobbed off. In short...if you are consider working in food, make sure you are in a store that has lots of staff and you'll be fine, otherwise don't bother. I have seen so many new staff come and go recently and so many new managers come and leave once they finish their training, get into store and realise they have been sold a lie. Can be a reasonable job and good career but do your homework! P.s media people.....don't bother telling me to contact my store manager or area manager. My store manager does the best he can and is always approachable and I am sick of people telling the area manager who is only interested in furthering his own career with his Tesco buddies. I have posted on here instead so that others are aware and have a an educated choice rather than be hoodwinked into a job to then be pressured each day beyond what is reasonable

Pros

Work/Life balance is good and very much in your control. Good quality of training given when first given Store Manager role. Competitive rates of pay at all levels. Bonus potential based on Store performance - up to 30% of salary based on performance Jan-Dec then paid out in April/May following year. Earned through sales budget, customer exit survey and P&L contribution. Large company so plenty of support e.g. Operations trainers, HR etc Opportunities to apply for positions in other parts of the business e.g. Property department, availability support etc

Cons

Lack of opportunity after Store Manager e.g. Area Manager opportunities. Sometimes too much going on with launches etc can hinder you running your Store e.g. Having to travel 100 miles for an event that adds very little in terms of useful information or training.
