Pros

1. If you want to live in Austin and like working for a big corporation, Dell is one of the few big employers in Austin. 2. Pay is average to good. It depends on where you are, but better than many smaller companies. 3. They let you work from home.

Cons

1. A lot of people at Dell got hired in with the .com boom and they're still there because they can't find a job that pays as much outside. Needless to say, the reason they can't find a job outside is because they're not worth what they make. 2. They expect you to be available 24/7. 3. The most bureaucratic company I've ever worked for. 4. If you are in IT, don't go there because they want to outsource all of it to India. 5. You have to work odd hours to be able to talk to the rest of your team, which will be in India. 6. Benefits are not that great and the stock purchase program is gone. 7. The best way to get promoted is to brown nose your way to the top, not based on hard work or merit.

Pros

It did provide a solid education about the direct business model and great supply chain management. Most of my peers were people I respected and worked extremely hard to be successful in a difficult environment.

Cons

The management team had no idea what to do when the times got tough other than cut heads. They got the company into the terrible mess it was in by being uncreative, irresponsible and uncompassionate about what impact their same decisions to do the same things over and over again have on employees and their families. It always was a tough place to work, which isnt bad when the compensation matches and you are being rewarded for the hard work. They didnt care about anything other than hitting the number. When no one could figure out what or why the business wasnt doing well they repspond with even more ludicrous goals that nobody will be able to hit. Equivalent to just completing a mile run in 4 minutes, then they turn around and want you to run the mile in 2 minutes with a straight face.

Pros

As large organizations go, it's not the worst one in the world to work for. Round Rock is a "company town" - your Dell badge gets you $2 off at the local Supercuts. Also, HR tries - albeit somewhat cluelessly - to make the place a better one in which to work.

Cons

Crushing, incompetent middle and senior management. Lack of vertical mobility without leaving the company: there's a saying here that Dell is the best first and third job you can have, because you have to leave Dell and be rehired to be promoted. Cubicles.
