Pros

1. Absolutely stunning home campus. Beach volleyball, bodegas, artisan coffee shops, sprawling over-the-top tech decadence. Announces to the world, “We are the best at what we do and no one can stop us!’ 2. Employee benefits and perks are over the top. Food, dry cleaning, mobile phones, healthcare on campus are heavily subsidized. Free electric car charging, covered parking, extra holidays. 3. You will interact with the smartest people in their fields. Truly a place of deeply talented individuals and leaders that will inspire you to do your best work every day. 4. Mission is simple, effective. Everyone’s bought in from the top to the bottom. 5. Consistent and reliable financial performance and growth. 6. Big bonuses, great employee stock program.

Cons

1. Profit over patients culture driven by a win at any cost mentality. Edwards will walk away from accounts if they are unwilling to pay the Edwards price. 2. Work life balance is a myth. If you have a family, this is not the place for you. If you have older parents or younger children to care for, this is not the place for you. If you have hobbies outside of work, good luck enjoying them. Racking up unused PTO is an unofficial badge of honor and ‘dedication’ to the mission. If you regularly use PTO, you will be marked as ‘not dedicated.’ 3. Performance culture driven by fear of losing your job. This has to do with a combination of the company performing so well for so long and the long line of people who want to work at Edwards that current employees know they are replaceable at a moments notice. 4. Talent development is comically absent. Edwards mantra is: ‘Hire the best talent. Drive them into the ground. Dump them. Repeat.’ 5. Diversity is tolerated. Conformity is promoted. Edwards talks a really good game and the LinkedIn posts prove it but if you are not a Caucasian male with a faith based in Judeo-Christian principles, good luck rising through the ranks. They don’t want that kind of diversity up there. 6. Tribalistic, protectionist culture of ‘me versus them’. If you’re new to the organization, your default position is ‘a threat’ and it is very hard to gain the necessary political relationships you need in order to survive. Long term. 7. Edwards is not a meritocracy. Achievement is not the currency to future professional growth. Instead, it is about who you know, who to place best on, who you align with, and who protects you.

Reputation of a Great Place to Work is No Longer

Pros

Pay appears good on surface until you actually experience what is expected. Decent benefits on par with other major medical device companies. Decent cafeteria on site. Many well equipped conference rooms on campus so that you can carry out productive meetings. On site gym is decent and monthly dues are cheap. Basketball court on site too. Non smoking campus.

Cons

Highly political organization where you find your job will be pulled in all directions. They will always use the excuse that "we are saving lives" to cause you to work ultra long hours. Work life balance is not a consideration. Sink or Swim Environment. Processes are not up to par with the result that you will have to work extra hard to get the job done to expectation. Again, work life balance is not a consideration. If you don't do as told or "as expected,", you may experience coercion. Competitive and cutthroat work environment some might even call abusive. This place is very different from what it was just five years ago as I experienced. There has been high turnover and some of this turnover continues to today. They give you "one week downtime holiday" between Christmas and New Years so you are sold that you get three weeks vacation. In reality, only works out to about 2 weeks and three days vacation with no floating holidays. So, it's just like you are starting out in any other company with two weeks vacation keeping in mind other companies usually give you two floating holidays.

Pros

The good thing about Edwards is that it has very stable working conditions and job security. Edwards saves many lives, which is a very noble and commendable cause. The CEO seems like a very good guy- very caring and smart.

Cons

I was shocked to see that so many senior and principal level engineers lack very basic technical engineering skills. Very simple computer programming, Cad, and basic scientific principles were a foreign subject to most of the engineers I worked with. I was hired on as an engineer, and I did not know what to do with the lack of scientific and managerial foundation that I had encountered. Many engineering projects could have been better performed by high school students. In addition to the lack of technical knowledge, there were managers that lacked basic common sense. I'm baffled by how a company can run with this many ignorant employees. Management is bent on maintaining the status quo because they don't want to be found out for being quacks. The good news is that Edwards is very good about keeping employees. If you know nothing about the medical field or engineering and if you can get your foot in the door, it's likely that you can keep working there forever. The Edwards slogan is "Life is Now" is true for the products. But within the company, the saying does not maintain. There is such a professional facade because the workplace is in reality a very sterile environment. Clean rooms yes, but also the employees seem very sterile. There's a clear lack of energy and spirit within the company that's masqueraded by a fake smile and expensive clothing. I have not met an employee at Edwards who say they like their job, let alone love their job. There is an unproductive mentality and a toxic vibe at Edwards.
