Pros

-Great people -Collaborative Atmosphere -Depending on the position decent approach to work-life balance -Home Office usually will not fire individual employees without a good reason -Opportunity for overtime at decent rates

Cons

-Insanely busy depending on department -The workload leads to stress and massive backlogs -The backlogs do not get cleared quickly due to hiring practices that mean it takes months to hire a single person, often you're just expected to tough it out with no extra help -The job is severely underpaid given the workload -While Line managers are understanding upper management seems completely disconnected from reality let alone their employees -There are several very upsetting areas you may be transferred to, not going to get into details but it's possible you will be moved from a somewhat relaxed department (by civil service standards anyway) to an area that cannot retain any employees due to upsetting nature of the work (deportations?) causing severe mental health issues to the staff -career opportunities and progression (on the job) is minimal to non-existent. Civil Service treats external applications same as internal. It's great if you want to ensure 100% impartiality, but if you want to LEARN on the job and actually PROGRESS your career within your area then Civil Service has absolutely nothing to offer to you. -Your job is up to the whims of ministers, you thought you could hold on to working from home and flexi time? No, because the minister said so. You want a pay rise to at least attempt to keep in line with private sector? No, because the minister said so. You need greater resources work in your department because Brexit doubled your team's workload permanenetly? No, because minister thinks Brexit makes your work EASIER even if it only makes sense in their head. But don't you worry, when coming out of pandemic you will be sent a nice thank you email by the PM, following by the announcement that unfortunately, some of you will need to go, not because the work no longer exists, but because the PM and ministers decided to make cuts.
