Pros

You get to make many contacts, it is comfortable, some really nice and helpful people about.

Cons

Huge age gap (far too many people above 40 and hardly any below 25), dysfunctional management, outdated tools for 21st century, site falling apart, progression opportunities extremely limited

Pros

The line of work is interesting, you can learn lots about global affairs, geography, current events, different cultures, and international conflicts etc.

Cons

The work culture is completely toxic. The Asylum Seekers are viewed upon as numbers by management, not people. Decision makers are encouraged to make the quickest decision, not the right decision. There is immense pressure to meet unachievable targets. Performance managers are hired as 'team leaders', solely to crack the whip, without any knowledge or experience of the asylum process. Mis-use of Performance Improvement Plans, which are used as a stick to beat the decision makers with. Work related mental health issues are rife in there, management know this but don't care. Bullying is rampant as the work environment encourages it. The union is privy to what is going on but deliberately do not act upon it, instead choosing to regurgitate management lines and reinforce the delusion that the target system is fair and all is well.

Pros

Being able to put UK Visas & Immigration on your CV Some limited exposure to Human Rights ECHR litigation.

Cons

Working in Lunar House East Croydon (the building where dreams die) Horrible members of staff with bad attitudes Shocking lack of professionalism, A world where they use paper files and lose them so often, Immigration offenders remain in detention as a result and the Secretary of State gets litigated against for wrongful detention because of poorly motivated staff and hugely incompetent senior managers and ultimately tax payer’s money is wasted compensating people who should be removed from the UK. Blatant discrimination against disabled employees, such a poor culture of implementing the requirements of the Equality Act. A culture of bullying and harassment instigated by senior managers (SEO) if your face does not fit. Working with people who are so demoralised all they are waiting for is their pensions or death.
