Pros
There are some fantastic individuals working across the Civil Service and within the Home Office. The specific department was fascinating, challenging, and offered help to the public. When I was supported by an incredible manager, I thrived for the first time in my career as I was accepted for and supported with my strengths.
Cons
If you are unfortunate enough to be assigned a bad manager or lose a brilliant manager, you are at the mercy of the system. It is made incredibly easy for discrimination and unjust behaviour to continue as management know exactly how to tow the legal lines. I left a job I was not only good at and was promoted at but was fiercely passionate about because my long-disclosed mental health struggles and neurodivergence became unpalatable. After months of battle to simply converse with my management about possible reasonable adjustments which never came to fruition, I resigned due to the impact it was having on my self worth and mental wellbeing. I am still recovering from this experience 6 months later and it has taken a catastrophic hit to my confidence and self esteem.
