Pros

Epic is truly a one of a kind company that has offered me wonderful opportunities. If you are motivated, dedicated and self-directed, you will have great success. The projects on the interface team are varied and numerous so it leaves for being busy continuously while never getting stale since things are moving so quick. I have been hear for a long time, and I never get stuck in a rut since there are always new challenges to meet. I get great satisfaction from taking ownership on projects that affect our entire division plus the customers I work with. It has been very rewarding to work with numerous large, prestigious healthcare organizations. You get a firsthand view into how they are making a noticeable difference in patient care, and you are an active part in that process. Also, the Sabbatical program is just about the best perk I've ever heard of from an employer. When I tell non-Epic people about this, they are just in shock. It is truly a great perk for the folks that are great fits for the company.

Cons

Work/life balance is a constant stuggle that you have to actively work on maintaining. Outages of any kind are sometimes more trouble than they are worth due to not having natural true backups that can take everything you are working on. The work just waits for you to get back to the office. Hiring for EDI is a constant struggle based on the hiring standards we employ so we are always behind on new talent to help lessen the burden on the rest.

Pros

The work is interesting and challenging, so you are never bored. Working in healthcare and for a very successful company is very rewarding - you can go home knowing the work I did was important. Your coworkers are intelligent, motivated, reliably competent, and often very fun people. The company is principled and makes corporate decisions based "the right thing to do". Big decisions are usually explained to the staff, so there is a good amount of transparency with the direction of the company. Everyone is allowed and expected to have a high degree of independence and ownership of their work. Merit is rewarded and valued over tenure, so if you're doing good work you have ample opportunities to choose your future projects. It's easy to move up even with little experience if you have the right skills and can make your projects successful.

Cons

You have to figure out your own career path, there's vew if any established career paths that last beyond a few years. The staffing strategy is "lean" meaning there are never enough people to do the work that needs to get done, which always puts an uncomfortable amount of work on each person. It's difficult to strike a work/life balance. You usually feel like you're not doing enough. If you can't come to terms with this problem, you're likely to burn out and quit.

Pros

Fun campus, beautiful artwork, interesting company social days, new infrastructure and leading edge technology, decent compensation and great benefits, good training

Cons

Once you've been trained, they keep piling more and more work on you until you break, burn out, or quit. Some people thrive in the environment, but the majority do not and leave after 2-3 years. It also depends greatly on what job role you have and what types of managers and co-workers you have. It doesn't matter how 'AWESOME' Epic is when you work so many hours and have no life.
