Pros

A great opportunity to provide scientific support to European policy making and mix with other European colleagues. Good salary with benefits. Ispra site is set in a lovely environment near the Lake Maggiore.

Cons

As with any big organisation it is bureaucratic and slow. Unless you hold a permanent position (increasingly difficult to secure) long-term employment is not an an option for contractual agent positions have a maximum of 6 years. So can be a career cul-de-sac. There are external positions but these have less benefits.

Pros

- it's a public administration, so you work for the general interest, not to enrich the shareholders - Great long-term project - International (EU-only) working environment - motivated and angaed colleagues - high professionalism - great sets of skills and competences (sometime underemployed, though) - great work-life balance conditions - good to great salaries for statutory staff

Cons

- it's a public administration, so things can be sometimes slow and very dependent on sometimes unpredictable political decisions - some aspects of its culture are a bit retro (it's not Google...) - the external public would see you as a fat cat on the gravy train

Pros

only internal tax 11%, internal pension fund (only after 10 years of service), 80 to 85% reimbursement of medical bills

Cons

no extra legal benefits, no luncheon vouchers, no group insurance, no salary increase since 2008 nor indexation, only half of public transport reimbursed, no double holiday pay, no end of year bonus, extremely late reimbursement of medical bills and very time consuming administration for payment requests and strict administrative rules compared to belgian medical insurance
