Pros

This is a great job for students looking for a summer job, or extra work on the side. When I was there, you usually worked about 4 hours a day, and your monthly paycheck is about 400 to 450. They'll let you off when their goals have been met, and will cut you early if your shift is slower then other shifts while balancing the remaining freight to be sorted by faster shifts. I was a Package Handler at their Swan Island location. Portland sees all fours seasons, and seasonal extremes Prepare for the elements, you work through the heat and the cold. The benefits are okay. They'll provide tuition assistance, and as a college student, this goes a long ways. Other then that, most of the people who work here tend to live paycheck to paycheck, or are students needing extra cash. Upward mobility is very limited.

Cons

This location had such a high turnover rate; I was only there for 3 months. The work is pretty intense, and you should finish about one truck per hour... hopefully five a shift per person.

Pros

Never have to go to the gym and I can eat whatever I want. The chaos is addictive. Overtime always available if your body can handle it.

Cons

Awful management that will lie to you and manipulate you. Unsafe environment with empty first aid kits. No accountability for some people, and intense scrutiny for others. Standards only apply sometimes. For the midnight/sunrise shifts, you will not know when you're going home. Every single day you will stay there until the work is done, which can mean 10-15 hours of hard physical labor five days a week. Unspeakably high turnover rate. 10 minute break once per shift isn't enough to recover. Terrible, neglected equipment.

De-Valuing Technology Decision by Decision

Pros

Some of the best people in the business Constantly challenged and learning.

Cons

Traditionally, FedEx was a growth based company centered around its operations and value for technology. In the last five years, the motto has been grow the company, shrink technology investment (the opposite of almost every other company). This wasn’t handled strategically but rather a peanut butter spread across all regardless of value derived. If you are looking at a tech job, investment is lacking. Long hours with little reward. Antiquated systems and processes. The leaders who were working to change this are now gone. Leaders that are left are all “yes men” or marketers.
