      Self-defeating Service Desk

      Pros

      Camaraderie, we're all in it together Some good people on the desk Certain managers are good to work for/with Opportunities to progress do come up Those willing to learn/ take initiative can progress within the company, I did Has improved in some aspects in the time I spent there (1.5 years) Decent basic grounding in technical support, flawed but substantial knowledge base

      Cons

      Nepotism (or is it just human nature) Some management clearly brown-nosed their way up with little in the way of technical knowledge For every good change, there will be a bad/stupid one Micromanagement of agents, absurd constraints such as how much time per month you can use the toilet/your free time on shift (now a grand total of two hours/ month), insufficient break and lunch times. Self-defeating constraints and red tape for red tape's sake Relevant to above, high attrition rate of staff. Many good, competent people give up/move onto greener pastures/ get fired for stupid reasons like being one minute late too many times. Any rube can walk through the door Below standard pay compared to equivalent positions, even when promoted You can just tell many people are depressed and fed up

      Too many wasted opportunities

      Pros

      Good working atmosphere (well in the team I was in anyway). Global brand. Pay wasn't too bad for UK & I employees.

      Cons

      Managers seem to be immortal. Many are promoted beyond their competency and just moved sidewards when disaster strikes. implementation of FSESL was a joke! Departments work in silos and don't co-operate with each other. The company always seems to be playing catch up with competitors instead of being an innovator. Last years transformation of Engineering services was badly botched and caused huge reputational damage with customers and massive loss of morale for the workforce.

      Inconsistent and Average

      Pros

      Working from home and flexibility Many technically competent colleagues A few people recognise the need to change There are some interesting projects

      Cons

      The organisation is too disjointed, and unstructured - it has no coherent vision and cannot galvanise staff. Its performance distinctly average and this leads to patchy success, outweighed by frequent failures. There is a reliance on a few “good” people, and too much focus on the initial sale. Career and pay progression are poorly managed (if at all) and based on “local” decisions in the hands of a few, not merit.
