Pros

When I first started everyone was focused on helping each other be successful, people cared about the company, about ensuring their managers were successful and focused on client success. The compensation plan was average, however, if you exceeded your goals the incentive trips were incredible and the company celebrated success. Plus you had the opportunity to earn uncapped commissions. There was a National sales meeting where training and people development and celebration of success was embraced. We tried to be truly strategic in nature.

Cons

Now it's all about monthly attainment and focusing on the transaction rather than the client outcomes. The incentive trip used to be global for all teams around the world, now it is regional (cost measure), the amount of time has also been cut. The mandate is to be a trusted advisor to the client base by 20/20, however it is difficult to be a strategic partner when you focus your efforts on the transaction. The shift has moved from an annual quota to monthly, it seems like the company is emulating the large software vendors. The managers are becoming younger and younger truly are focused on tasks and micromanagement as are of the sales role has moved to predictive analytics. If you don't follow the the outlined steps then you are doomed. Hence the managers are not sales leaders and coaches who inspire, rather they focus on activities that are stated to drive results and become task masters. Not the company I started with nor loved when I was there.

Pros

Gartner has a strong brand, employing intelligent analysts and executive partners .

Cons

Gartner has a strong brand and ability to delivery to clients, but the '80's style' sales management is floored and having a negative effect on the client relationships. There is a 'management click' and if you want to progress you have to move roles every two years. You will be trained to win deals and drop accounts. There is a lot of talk about client experience and value, but in reality you are expected to constantly push and ask for sales growth before establishing value. There is an expectation that you should be pushy and aggressive with your clients. The sales environment is old school with inexperienced sales leaders that have often never managed before or worked outside of Gartner. Many have grown up internally and some promoted for aggressive client and colleague behaviour. The sales environment internally has been compared with ‘double glazing’ sales tactics. This company is not recommended for enterprise level sales professionals. Attrition rates have been high in 2015 compared to previous years, with many sales and analysts leaving and poor overall sales results in the UK. .

Pros

Excellent training program and provides a reputable name on your resume. You will have the opportunity to work with some pretty unique companies and learn about their corporate IT needs by working with the CIO. It's a fun position if you like to learn and casually read the research on trending technology topics.

Cons

Since I started working there, the opportunity to succeed has diminished and I wasn't able to meet the kind of financial compensation I was promised/expecting (despite doubling the NCVI I needed for Winner's Circle and having excellent sales numbers). Bonuses became hard to achieve, quotas are higher, and worst of all, the territories in which you have to prospect from are extremely small and continually diminishing. It was hit or miss... a few people received great territories and opportunity while many others were bound to have unfortunate, bad years that were out of their control. Even though I luckily had a great year, the compensation was mediocre and it's hard to sustain that success the following year. Another unrelated "con" is the location... Fort Myers. Yep, Fort Myers is hands down one of the most boring places as a young professional. It's a retirement community city so you'll most likely need to drive to Tampa or Miami every weekend to find something to do. Overall, the compensation is decent if you're coming straight out of college for your first job. However, it isn't a position you want to be in long-term. Be sure to use the role as a stepping stone to something better.
